In the United States, there are currently 510,000 children in foster care. Of these children, 129,000 are awaiting a permanent home. The Adoption Excellence Awards, presented by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), have been awarded annually since 1997 to recognize individuals, families, States, Tribes, and organizations that share and support HHS's priority for permanency for children in public foster care. The awards demonstrate the Department's national commitment to rebuild the lives of children in foster care and provide national recognition to those who achieve permanency for those awaiting adoption.
